Do I Need To Pass A Car & Trailer Driving Test

The rules on what you can tow are different depending on when you passed your driving test.

Licences issued from 1 January 1997

If you passed your car driving test on or after 1 January 1997 you can:

  • drive a car or van up to 3,500kg maximum authorised mass (MAM) towing a trailer of up to 750kg MAM
  • tow a trailer over 750kg MAM as long as the combined MAM of the trailer and towing vehicle is no more than 3,500kg

MAM is the limit on how much the vehicle can weigh when it’s loaded.

You have to pass the car and trailer driving test if you want to tow anything heavier.

Licences issued before 1 January 1997

If you passed your car test before 1 January 1997 you’re usually allowed to drive a vehicle and trailer combination up to 8,250kg MAM. View your driving licence information to check.

You’re also allowed to drive a minibus with a trailer over 750kg MAM.

Maximum authorised mass

Maximum authorised mass (MAM) means the weight of a vehicle or trailer including the maximum load that can be carried safely when it’s being used on the road.

This is also known as gross vehicle weight (GVW) or permissible maximum weight.

It will be listed in the owner’s manual and is normally shown on a plate or sticker fitted to the vehicle.

The plate or sticker may also show a gross train weight (GTW), also sometimes called gross combination weight (GCW). This is the total weight of the tractor unit plus trailer plus load.

You must check your vehicles ability to tow, also check the MAM for your trailer, this will overrule any of the weights and measures shown in the examples.

The penalties for overloading are:

  • 5-10% = £100 fine
  • 10-15% =£200 fine
  • 15-30% =£300 fine
  • 30%+ = court summons, immobilisation of vehicle and fines.

All penalties carry the possibility of endorsement points and invalidated insurance.

Passing B+E Category (car/trailer) Driving Test

The B+E category on your licence allows you to tow a trailer up to 3.5tonnes MAM (maximum authorised mass) with a vehicle weighing up to 3.5 tonnes MAM.

The towed element can be of almost any category i.e., low loader flat bed, horse box, box body or caravan.

What’s involved in the B + E Trailer Test?

The test is broken down into two sections:

Section 1 – the reverse manoeuvre, and uncouple/recouple

This section will be conducted on private land, at the test centre.

  1. You will be asked to read a new style number plate from a distance of 20 meters, if you cannot the test will not go ahead.
  2. The examiner will ask you 5 of the 15 ‘show me – tell me’ questions. (These will be provided by WELL-INTUITION during your training.)
  3. The examiner will ask you to complete the reverse manoeuvre, this is to prove that you can confidently drive and control the car and trailer whilst reversing.
  4. You will asked to demonstrate your ability to undertake safety checks on your vehicle and trailer, this will include uncoupling and recoupling the trailer.

Section 2 – the ability to drive/tow

This section is conducted on public highways.

The section last for approximately 50 minutes you will be required to tow your trailer on varying road types and conditions in Norwich to a high standard in accordance with the DVSA standards set out for all UK tests. To pass the test you must not exceed more than 15 minor faults, and not obtain any serious or dangerous faults (just one of these will result in a failure).

During the 50 minute drive there is an independent driving period lasting about ten minutes where you will be required to follow a series of direction, road signs and/or markings.
